Mulching vs Non Mulching mowers, what are the differences?
Question:Hi guys, i was just wondering 'cause of school, if there are any differences between the two types of lawn mowers? Things like if they have a two or four stroke motor and which ever was heavier ? Ty in advance!
Answers:
Generally, the deck design of a mulching mower is different than that of a non-mulching mower. In a mulching mower, the decks tend to be designed with more height. The goal is to keep the cut grass aloft longer so that the mulching blade can cut the clippings multiple times (finer grass clippings decompose quicker). Mulching blades usually have tabs that create lift, also helping to keep clippings aloft under the deck. Most mulching mowers have a self-closing chute for discharge or bagging options. The mulching mower chute is generally designed to close completely without interrupting the flow of grass clippings beneath the deck. A non-mulching mower deck is generally designed to direct the flow of grass to the chute as quickly as possible. Often times baffles are installed to increase the flow rate and direct clippings to the chute while minimizing clumping. Chutes, on non-mulching mowers, are never designed to minimize impacts on under deck air flow when closed.
Motor size has nothing to do with it--a regular mower on a semi large lawn and you will have about 12 garbage bags of grass. If you use a mulching mower the grass is chopped so fine there is no raking and no pick up, providing you know how to mow. Mulching blades can be bought for any mower.
