Birds in the Garden?
Question:I need Methods of keeping Black Birds and Crows out of the Garden. They are Eating all the Corn.
Answers:
I live out in the country and we use aluminum pans. Just put them on a string on a 5 ft. pole and stick them in the ground near your corn. The wind will make them move and for some reason it will scare them off. It may have to do with the suns reflection on them or the sound it makes when bangs against pole. Anyway, that's what the farmers do around where I live. Hope this helps!
What you need is a plastic owl decoy like hunters use, place it up high in a tree, or on the top of a building where the other birds can see it. make sure it is facing your crops
They dont like the presence of predator birds in the area, and will keep them away.
Other than that a scarecrow (kids just love helping to build these), or running lengths of string over your corn with streamers that flutter in the breeze are worth a try.
In addition to props or predatory birds, pie pans, etc...find a spot far from your garden and mount a squirrel feeder...Put ears of field corn on it and the crows will go after it as opposed to your garden...(less work to eat the husked field corn).I lure squirrels, crow and other birds by providing food at distant locations.seems to work for me, yet I don't have a commercial-sized garden either...
good luck though
Crows and Pigeons and Squirrels are all nasty pests when it comes to gardens and food. They are all driven to survive and will overcome almost any obstacles put in front of them in their need to eat. I would try any or all of the other suggestions, but don't count on any of them working. Maybe you need to reconsider growing corn. Besides, when the corn is ripe is when it is dirt cheap in stores. :-)
I bought a plastic owl with glass eyes and put is on a cane pole just at the top of my tomatoes plants which are next to my corn. Not one crow has stopped into my garden since the owl has been put in. I looks like it is just sitting on the plant.
