How long does it take for a walnut tree to bare fruit?
Question:
Answers:
They can begine producing walnuts as soon as 6 to 8 years after planting.but it depends on the size of the tree transplant as well. There's probably scads of research info available on the web...
good luck
it will never bare fruit as for walnuts are well nuts.
Let's hope yours NEVER produces. It does take a few years to start producing the nuts. There normally a larger 'crop' every other year, but do product every year after start. The nuts that fall are green in color and later change to black.
They make a tremendous mess. We had 2 black walnut trees; cut one down that had several larger dead branches - - it was filled with carpenter ants which some got into the inner walls of our house 2 years ago and exterminator & us still fighting to get rid of all of those ants. Sold unaffected trunk of that tree.
The other tree drops its 'fruit' banging on the roof & adding to mess in eaves. Squirrels running amuck & digging holes to store the nuts. Remain nuts on ground harsh on feet, rotting on ground or sidewalk, leaves black oil stains.
I think Carole Q must be in the USA or another country I have never encountered carpenter ants in the UK. If you are in the southern half of the UK and your tree is not in a frost pocket it should bear nuts in about 10 years from planting. If you are much further north than Nottingham I doubt it will bear nuts as it will be too cold. Also they don't like salt winds so if you live near the coast it will not be happy.
Summer pruning induces an earlier start to nut bearing- a worthwhile operation unless your prepared to wait for 15 to 20 years. Repeatedly pinch out the tips of the stronger shoots (not the thin ones) whenever five or six leaves have grown. Gather immature nuts for pickling in early to midsummer, while still soft enough for a needle to pierce them. Ripe nuts are ready for picking when the green husks have turned black and the nuts have loosened.
