Why do I have mushrooms growing in my potted plants?
Question:I have some potted strawberries and other vines and roses around my patio, on the ground and today I went out there and found that there are a lot of small mushrooms growing in the pots. They look like starw mushrooms- what can I do to stop this? Is it harmful? What causes this to happen?
Answers:
mushrooms are the "blossoms" of fungi. Fungi blossom when the conditions are moist and warm.. like during the summer.
fungus often occurs in potting soil. it's relatively normal. Just pick the mushrooms and throw them away. maybe water a little less.
theyre there because the spores floated there, you could try killing them with spray that is SAFE for fruit and flowers.
i had yellow mushrooms growing in my house plants (no idea how they got there) and just dug them out and tossed them, havent seen anymore since then. you can call your local greenhouse and describe the problem and they can recommend something if it sounds like the plants are suffering b/c of the mushrooms. theyre probably harmless though.
Sometimes mushrooms(spores) grow in potted plants because there is too much humidity.
I think that those mushrooms came to "eat" the decaying plant matter in your soil. It isn't bad. But if you don't like the look, I would suggest you pull them out. I thnk the only to stop this is to make sure you don't have too much decaying matter.
Hope this helps.
I have them too this year. It has been a VERY wet and humid climate here since April and they started coming up about 6 weeks ago. Harmless. I just pick them out and throw them away. They are in my rosemary plant, and I've been using the rosemary in recipes, and have not had any problems with it.
