How do i kill overgrowth in the garden permanently (weeds/brambles,etc)?

Question:i need to landscape the garden in a house we've just bought. However, the entire garden is overgrown and i need to kill this overgrowth permanently so that i can lay a lawn, etc. How do i do this 9without it costing me the earth!)?

Answers:
Roundup is the best you can use it is biodegradable It works by systemic means that is the when you spray it on the leaves they take the chemical down to the roots and kills the plant. Any spray that hits the soil is neutralized so any plant you put in later will not be affected so your lawn will be OK . However any weed seed in the soil will germinate but if you mow it regularly it will eventually die except for grass which grows stronger the more you cut it. If you use something like sodium chlorate it stays in the soil for a long time

The earth is what you need. If you use a weedkiller like RoundUp it'll be sterile for a couple of years. Proper but uncheap way is to replace the topsoil.
Use Round Up for Brush and bushes. You can plant in it with in 24 hours after you apply it !
Spray with a glyphosate herbicide. It will be a couple of weeks before You see anything happening but dont be tempted to go in and cut the stuff down. When the top growth is brown cut it all down and clear the area then wait and see if anything comes up, if necessary spray again. Especially in the case of brambles, nettles, bindweed etc 3/4 applications may be necessary. Then go in and dig out the roots. Good luck, you have a hard job in front of you!
my suggestion would be to cut it down as low as you can and then put a clear or even black plastic over it . the heat generated will kill the plants and seeds. you need to put it on during the hot months of the year and for 1 to 2 months. good luck
i would use round up, after two weeks weeds and grass will be dead , then cut back any brambles round up will not kill a hard root plant like or brambles or trees so you need to dig the roots out of the ground to open up the area, now depending on the size of your garden, you can rent a rotovator to bring up the top soil, then get your level right and rake , see if you can hire a stone rake this will save you a lot of time and does a great job when you have all the stones and debre cleaned off you can sow your lawn if by chance you live in the midlands of Ireland i would look at it for you,
Take a weed wacker and level the stuff. Then cover the area with landscaping fabric and weight it down so it won't blow away. (You can use those metal pins to hook it down) Then wait. It will look terrible for a while or at least strange. Later much later remove the landscaping fabric and plant your lawn. My friend did this using black plastic trash bags and large Rubbermaid containers to weight it down when she bought her house with too many flower beds.
Hi you are better off spraying your garden with chemical weed killer wait a few days for it to take then take the top of the lawn bin it then give the soil a good digging mix with top soil make sure you rake out any left grass/weeds etc then use grass seed that's what I did to mine and now I have one of the best gardens in our street it takes time but its well worth it
Do you want to rent a bobcat tractor? I did this before putting in my landscaping, mostly to create a level grade. It cost about $250 for four hours and the rental company delivered it to my house for free. It was a lot of fun.

Here's a few other options:
-Go over the area with a rototiller. If you do this, it would be a good idea to work in some organic compost. That will help your lawn retain water better, saving you $$$ in the long run.
-spray the weeds with a good herbicide then cover the area with a black tarp.
If you have the time, you could first cut everything back as much as possible and compost the green stuff (burn the brambles) Then hire a rotavator which is a bit like a mechanised plough to churn everything up. Remove the soil and sieve. You can't expect to kill it permanently unless you want a desert. This should remove the majority of the problem but it is very hard work.
