I recently started a veggie garden, how or is there a certain way to grow cucumbers?

Question:I started to grow some and they were looking great, then a week ago i found little green, yellow, and brown bugs that looked like baby ticks! they were all over the leaves! the plant started to turn yellow, so i put it out of its pain and misery, I pulled it out!
What can i do for the next batch that i have started grow again. Please help... Much Aloha, DebraJean

Answers:
The bugs you are describing sound like aphids. These critters can be killed rather easily using a soap spray. I use a small spray bottle with just enough soap to make the water sudsy. The citrus soaps tend to do better. Try to use a non-detergent soap though. Also, in my experience, cucumbers will perform better if they are allowed to climb something. They really benefit from air exchange. Less disease and so forth.

wish i knew, i grow my veggies in pots on my deck :)
Dust with seven, or if you want insecticide free look into a fabric called floating row or something like that , it is a super light mesh that will let light through but stop insects providing you install it correctly.
Look up homemade bug sprays that use dish detergent...that'll keep the bugs away.
As soon as you plant them, protect them with floating row covers. This will prevent any pest from getting to them. When the flowers appear, remove the row cover for a while, so that they can be pollinated. I do not recommend using pesticides, especially some of the new ones that are called "systemic", these have been linked to the honey bee disappearance. Happy gardening!
mix 1 cup of Epsom salt to a gallon water mix 5 table spoons dawn detergent and spray this weekly.
es

the bugs hate this mixture not toxic to birds and you and works

also plant a row of marigold between rows of veggies.
I have never had bug problems, however, my cucumber plants have grown poorly if they are not regularly fertilized and watered. What I do to keep bugs away from all my vegetable plants is plant hot peppers! Jalapeno, hungarian, chile or any type that is hot. I found this out by accident because I realized that wherever I planted the peppers, bugs vanished. Plant one pepper plant about a foot or less from the cucumbers. It works!
We have always "hilled" cucumbers when we plant them. It seems best to make little hills in the dirt and plant a few seeds in each hill, this will allow proper drainage. If cukes have too much water their leaves will turn yellow. If it is a bug problem causing them to turn yellow I would try a insecticide.
There is some stuff called 7-10 dust it is a white powder sprinkle it on the plants every 2 weeks. Make sure you have a fence for the cumber to grow on. It will be hard to find the cucumbers if you let it grow on the grow. Trust me I am going through it know. Make sure you water daily and fertilize it at least every 2 weeks or what ever the package says. Different products work differently.
