What would you have done in this situation..?
Question:I got a guy to cut my lawn, he told me how much, (it was higher than most would have charged, but still reasonable) and then said, "Plus a tip" and then giggled?? I usually cut my own lawn, but sometimes I pay to have it done.I gave him a tip, but then felt kinda wrong for doing it.
Answers:
nope, wouldn't have tipped. you wouldn't tip someone that paints your house or paves your driveway. the cost quoted is the price expected. the 'giggle' was just an embarrassing way of saying, "It's ok to give me more"
i wouldn't have tipped.but you are nicer than me.lol
You did okay.
You were under no obligation to tip him; but this was his way of saying he'd be willing to accept more. How long mowing a lawn will take is a tough thing to estimate. The guys that do it a lot have learned by experience how to do it. This guy, hasn't done it enough to really know.
So, he estimated. He wanted the business (probably needed the cash) and this was his way of saying "I don't know what to bid, but this is the least I'll do it for," and he gave you his price. But as soon as he said it, he began worrying that he was pricing himself too low. (He wasn't, you said you thought it was too high.)
So, regretting his "low-ball" offer (according to him) he gave you a chance to up it some, without obligating you to do so.
It is never wrong to tip someone, though, when a service is rendered.
He probably didn't deserve the tip--but that you gave him one has set a new "price" for his services in his head. With experience, he'll learn that the price is too high. But for now, don't worry about it. It wasn't necessary, but was okay.
Now, for your own sake, set a price. When someone comes by to mow the lawn say, "I pay $XX.XX. If I think you've done a good job, there may be a $X.XX tip--but it has to be a really good job--and I'll inspect the work." You might even explain what a "good job" is (trim the hedges, mow tightly around the trees, don't run over any flowers, etc.)
It's your lawn, you ought to be setting the price (and the tip, if earned.)
I wouldn't have tipped. The only way I would have considered it is if he worked for someone else...
He didn't mean money.
I would have given him a tip.
it's not wrong to give somebody a tip.
karma! you have done well young grasshopper.
any type of service at home usually gets a tip, better the job better the tip
Tip is included in paying someone to cut your grass. Tip to him would be to point him towards the water faucet(free water) or tip him off where the end of your driveway is to leave that way.
Either he was joking and had a nice surprise when you actually gave him a tip, or as someone else said - he didn't mean money and i hope he didn't get that nice surprise...
What's so wrong with a tip. We tip other service workers, waitresses, maids, delivery people. The tip is a reflection of how much we liked thier work.
My personal rule. NEVER if THEY ask for the tip.
