Are POPPIES (mixed oriental) pretty EASY to GROW??

Question:I live in the northeast, and would LOVE to grow several poppies. I see that they are on sale on a particuliar site, and wanna make sure that they are simple to grow, plus it isn't too late to plant them in my garden!! :o)
WEll, I'll actually be using top soil for the entire garden

Answers:
You should be okay. This whole season has been weird everywhere from what I've seen and heard. But I'd do it this week at the latest and you'll have better luck with nursery stock rather from seed. If you do it from seed, soak them about 12- 24 hours before-hand in wet paper towel. And if you get enough hot, dry wx you might get a few blooms. There are some varieties that are perrenials and while they might not do much this year, if left for another season (well-mulched over winter) will be stronger for next year. You are pushing the corner of the envelope planting this late, but give it a go. It doesn't hurt to learn from experience. A well-drained sandy-to-clay loam is what they prefer. Top-soil may make them spindly.

I live in northwest Canada and I grow Oriental poppies with not problems, they are beautiful. I have them planted in front of my home where they get a southern exposure, lots of sun. I water them when they get dry in warm weather, every couple days. Other than that they get no special attention and the plants get bigger and have more blooms every year.
