When would be a good time to transplant Blackberry bushes?
Question:About 4 years ago I bought and planted a blackberry bush in my yard. It has really done well and spread out. The problem is that I would like to dig it up and give it to my dad because he would love it and take good care of it.
When would be a good time to dig it up and give it to my dad?
Answers:
The best time to transplant any plant, etc...is the fall...
Good luck
Before the cops search your house. You can hide your stash in the hole., Aside from that, it's over 4 years old, it sounds like it is too big to transplant. Just buy Dad a new bush.
When it goes dormant, before the ground freezes or very early in the spring, after you can dig it out but it has not yet awakened from dormancy
Wait until after it fruits later in the year then it will be safe to move it.
Although black berry bushes do go dormant, I've found you can transplant them anytime after they produce fruit. I suspect it's because they root so easily. If I let vines grow and touch the ground, they will take root by themselves.
I would dig up the plant early in the morning or late afternoon when the heat is less. Also, cut the plant back to about one third it's original size. The roots on a black berry can be extrememly long, so cut the root at a point that ensures enough to transplant.
Even under perfect conditions, they may drop some leaves after transplanted. Try to keep as much dirt on the roots as possible. Again, since the tiny hair-like rootlets absorb most of the water, ensure ample root to replant.
Because plants lose water rapidly during hot, dry and windy periods, transplanting at these times cause plants to undergo greater shock, and they may not recover as quickly. Water often (2 daily if very hot - during morning and evening) and as the root system regrows, new leaves will form.
good luck
