Yes, wasps do sting indeed and it can be quite painful. Personally I am allergic and my leg got stung once and had swollen up 5 inches. I'm not as bad as my mother who, when she got stung when she was a little girl, couldn't walk and probably should've been taken to a hospital. I wouldn't know that much.
The stinger though is located as a tip of the abdomen.

Yes they sure do sting....It is on their back side and they will not leave the stinger in as honey bees do ..I was stung twice by the same wasp
Wasps do sting and their stingers are located in the butts. However, having said that, you must be aware that most wasps are not aggressive and will only sting if provoked. Never touch or go near a wasp nest. There are many varieties of wasp and every one of them are beneficial in that they are pollinators and kill unwanted insects in the garden. The only wasp you really need to look out for are the "paper wasps". They are the ones that build honeycomb type nest under eaves and in unused bird houses. Although their sting is not very painful, they are the most aggressive wasp out there and they tend to attack in a swarm.
These wasps will not sting unless they feel you are a threat to their home. So, if you find one that you want to get rid of just wait until night and spray it with a wasp and hornet killer with at least a 20ft shot. I don't want to scare you because in all my years of gardening around these little guys I've only been stung once and that is because I was harvesting tomatoes next to a hive I did not know was there. Thankfully the guard paper wasp was kind enough to give me a warning sting before calling in the troops. Just remember, if you don't mess with them, they won't mess with you. If one happens to land on you just wait until it flies off.

I am allergic to wasp stings but not to bee stings (very few people are senstiive to both).
