Has anyone used a scythe?

Question:I needed to cut nettles and thistles in field, so asked my dad if i could borrow his strimmer and he told me it was dodgy and gave me his scythe. well it turned out to be alot of fun and very theraputic and good excercise.

Answers:
I get a lot of pleasure using mine.
However, it must be said that using my brush cutter gives equal pleasure in other ways.

They're great fun aren't they? especially if you get the blade really sharp.
Oh Yes good fun,and quite satisfying :0)
thats awesome ive always wanted to try a scythe out they are soo gnarly but i never had a reason too so give those fields a good whack for me plz
I have a small hand held one, and one like the grim reaper carries, they both work great on this farm. I use them a lot.
Yes I have used one, But be very careful please , your dad should have shown you how to use it . If you can find a branch arm“s length, with 2 small branches at the end,, a bit like a fork used to hold the Sunday roast whilst cutting it. This will help you cut better. By holding the branch, you push away the nettles, so you see the bottom of their stocks, then cut into them, . Like this when you cut, if the blade slips a little it will cut into the branch and not your leg. Take care. PS Sorry Willow, silly me
Like you said, very good fun and great exercise. The grass on my back lawn is 3' high at the moment so I would love a scythe to cut it.
All the neighbours are talking about it, still the old bat next door will like the grass for her guinnea pigs!.
Plus, we are being carbon neutral when we scythe!
I have only used one once when I was employed. I am talking about a long handled scythe. First make sure the blade is set and level with the ground. Next stand with your feet comfort apart...hold the two handles and carefully swing the scythe around to your right side then swing it around to the left in a sweeping motion. Once you get into the rhythm..it will get easier. Your dad is trying to inure you.
