Question:I have one that is five years old but its getting to big for the place I have it.
Answers:
Peonies are not like most perennials when it comes time to transplant. They do best when transplanted in late summer/early fall. Here are a few good links that discuss transplanting peonies. Good luck

You should separate it, at the roots, after it has bloomed or early spring when it first sends up shoots. Either time would be fine. You want it to establish a good root system before you get a hard freeze.
I did mine in the sping and I had a bunch of them , I dug up the main root system and split them with my shovel, I planted them along my property line, the next year they came back great and the following year even better! Be sure to keep them watered good after tranplanting them. Depending on where you live, you could do this anytime really! Perrenials are very resiliant! Remeber they attract ants, so don't plant it right next to the house! I just did my hostas three weeks ago, and they are doing awesome! they have put of many shoots and buds! good luck!
Remember that when you separate the roots, ensure that each new piece has several eyes.
