Collecting seeds?
Question:I have been trying to collect flower seeds for the first time over the past month, and it is a tedious job! Is there an easier way I can go about getting the seeds out of the pods and separating the hulls? Any advice would be appreciated.

It does take a little time, but is worth the effort. Be sure and wait until the seed heads have turned yellow/brown. That means the seeds are mature and ready for harvesting. The seeds should come off of the stem very easily. If the seeds aren't easily removed from the plant, they aren't ready (still green) and will probably not be viable.

Yes, it can be tedious. Sometimes (when I'm too lazy to de-pod them right then) I just put the seed pods in paper bags, and staple the bags shut until I'm ready to use them. In the case of something easy like calif. poppies, after a week or two in a dry paper bag, they will have most likely popped out of the pod for you. But, so many others are rather difficult, and the pod must be picked apart by hand. Makes me want to do a search on how the pro's do it.. Good luck!
