What can be done to deter my neighbor from planting more trees to block my ocean view?

Question:

Answers:
Alot of people plants trees on the Coast to prevent erosion. Everytime there is a Big Storm or Hurricane, you lose alot of soil. The tree roots will help stop the Erosion. You might want to think of adding some trees to your Property, before it ends up in the Ocean.

all you can do is politely realy your feelings to him/her. if it's their property, they can do what they want, but maybe if they knew how you feel about it, they'd reconsider. people usually don't consider others feelings until they're brought to thrie attention.
If the trees are on your neighbors' property, then not much other than politely asking them not to do it. If your neighbor were to actually say that he is planting the trees to spite you, then you may have a legal cause of action, but you would need witnesses and the outcome will vary according to which jurisdiction you are in.

If your property is on the ocean, then you do have a legal right to an unobstructed view in the direction of the navigational chanel. However, that is a very tough littoral right to assert and win in court.
GALVANIZED NAILS? MOST BEACH CITIES HAVE RULES ABOUT VIEW OBSTRUCTION, GO TO CITY HALL AND ASK. IF SUCH ORDINACES EXIST, FILE A COMPLAINT.
I am familiar with such a problem. The neighbors in questions were tree huggers so getting rid of the trees were out of the question.
We formed an alliance with the other affected neighbors and with the consent of the "tree owner" we all split the cost of a tree trimmer twice a year to keep the tree under the view level.
Good luck!
Tree's are a tricky one with the city...they are not structural, they are good for the environment and usually there is an ordinance "against" removing city trees.
It would be illegal but I have heard of many cases of people sneaking out at night in a dark cloak and poisoning the young trees with sump oil but that probably wouldn't be in the spirit of "green" living would it??? Have you spoken to this person and pleaded with him/her to desist?

Are they purposely doing this out of mean-spiritedness or are they trying to obtain more privacy? If the former, galvanized nails take too long (from Rick's answer)...take a pound of table salt, spread it close to the trunk and another pound spread around the branches' drip line. However, remember instant karma! If it's the latter, maybe the two households could discuss future landscaping with an offer for you to buy something more suitable (loose, lacy instead of tight evergreens). Finally, check ordinances.if the tree branches extend over your property line, you probably have the right to trim them back to the line.
I would personally talk to your neighbor, as they may not be aware of your concerns. If they are aware, then I would appeal to their sense of decency, and ask them if they could plant on a spot that doesn,t block your ocean view. Calmness is your key when talking with them, its hard to be nasty to someone when they are appealing to better judgement.
I'd call the city where you live and ask them if there is any thing that you can do about it.
give yore neighbor a whoopin'' he or she will never forget, ha.''
First, talk to the neighbor. If that doesn't work and you live in a neighborhood that has a council or committee or has lots of rules, you can go to them. If that doesn't work, go to your city/town assessors office and ask for a reassesment for yourself and your neighbor,as your view has changed forthe worse and your neighbor's has improved.
Your last resort, you can go to a lawyer, there are lawyers who specialise in stuff like this.
Good luck!
1. get a lawyer, they could be breaking the law
2. desperate? a midnight raid with round-up--but then you could be braking the law
