What is the best way to kill a tree, prior to chopping it down?

Question:I have a tree and want to stop its root growth by killing it or retarding its growth then I will go into the daunting task of chopping it down. I am thinking some powerful salts or some kind of tree poison.

Answers:
You should be able to accomplish this by simply cutting a two and a half to three inch slice into the tree's base with a saw in a complete circle around the tree --- this severes the trees nutrient flow and it will start the "dying off" process immediately !! And, it's done without any use of herbicides or poisons !! Much, much safer for everyone !

Hope this helps !

bore/drill some (1/2-1 inch)holes in it, then, pour in some "round-up",deluted per instructions, into the holes, and , then some around the base of the tree!---this will kill it in both directions--BOTH the roots, and the upward limbs/branches/trunk.
i think killing it first would be a really bad idea. it could fall on your house or something. if you're going to cut it down anyway i don't think you should worry about killing it first. i think you're asking for trouble by doing that.
Cut a ring around the trunk, about an inch deep, about 3 feet above the ground.

Trees draw their nourishment from the outside of the trunk, just below the bark.

It won't die right away, nothing will kill it fast. By fall it'll be dead. At least you won't have to poison the ground.
if you wanna use some poison, then you have to be careful cause you can pollute the water that goes under the ground. they have strict rules about that where I live.
Hello

Well, depending on the age of the tree determines it's strength to survive your general vegetation killers. Two suggestions the choice is yours. Find a total vegetation killer containing the chemicals Isopropylmine, Glyphosate Salts and Triclopyr Triethlamine Salt. The first is the total vegetation killer and the second is good for systemically destroying the plant. Using the regular dilution rate will not be very effective, I have used it on posison ivy that was climbing a rather large oak tree and it did nothing. You need to use a straight solution of the two and either soak as much of the foliage and bark of the tree as you can or just saturate the soil to be absorbed into the root system. I would do both but be careful if you have well water, streams, or ponds in the are because it can contaminate them. I do not particularly like saturating the soil for that reason. You can also drill holes into the tree itself as deep as you can get and poor the straight concentrate into them. Goodluck

Drill holes into the stump and pour rock salt into the holes. No doubt it will work my father taught me this!
i wouldnt go through the extra work. cut it down then have the stump ground down below grade. no need to kill it first...
Girdle it. Strip a ring of bark off all the way around the trunk, a few inches wide. This will stop the transfer of nutrients and the tree will die. No posion required.
