What plants would do well on a shady porch?

Question:My front porch faces west and yet with the overhang and the big live oak in the front yard, the porch is mostly shady. I have rocking chairs on the porch and would like to add some big pots of flowers that will grow and bloom well and make a very pretty show. Can you help?

This place has a great catalog that indicates flowers for shade. I've used them for years. However, you don't indicate if you want annuals [live one year and die] or perennials [come back every year]. Check out this place.they have lots of info and a great catalog.

Get the catalog first. they have great fotos and you can cut out the photos to design your planters before ordering.

most annuals...like impatients, begonias, etc. require daily watering and sun.

impatiens regular or double blooming
petunias, marigolds, zinnias, and rubber trees.
You could use impatiens or begonias.
There are a number of plants that do well in shaded areas.
Japanese laurel 'Crotonifolia'
begonia 'Ambassador Rose'
Dalmatian geranium
checkerberry
Rhodope haberlea
busy lizzie Super Elfin Series. These are just a few hope this helps
coleus

they have varigated leaves offering color
I have had luck with the purple passion..you can put them in a basket or even better put them in a hanging planter. They look like deep purple velvet leaves. Beautiful plant. Very easy to grow and once established to take cuttings from. To re root just place a piece of plant in plain ole water in about a week you will have a new plant for indoors or outdoors. They need to be taken inside in fall.
Tuberous Begonias do nicely. Just make sure that they are watered at least daily. I have these myself.
