PUt a big one on the nearest busy road, and then one at each road turn people will have to make so its easy to find.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT NAIL THEM TO TREES. I got the best results posting notices at the local liquor stores, markets, etc. And be sure to put the date and time, as well as address, on them.. And please take them down afterwards. Be sure to post them close to your home too!
Oh, and post it on Craigslist.com.
Start at the house and work outwards, towards the busiest nearby intersection.
If you are in a subdivision place two (one visible from each direction) at the entrance and at all turns leading to your house.
From the neighborhood entrance work towards the nearest busy intersection, again, placing signs at all turns. Make sure you cover at least two major intersections in opposite directions. That way you should have ample coverage in your area. I generally place about 10 signs out when I have a sale.
First, check with your city's ordinances. Some cities limit the placement of yard sale signs. Do not nail them to trees (ouch) or electric poles; the nails, screws, and staples can tear repairmens' gloves and clothing and can cause damage to the pole via moisture seeping in. So now you know where NOT to put them, where DO you put them? In front of your house. Several blocks away from your house at an intersection; a busy intersection is a good choice. Make sure the writing is large and legible so people don't have to slow down to read your sign (screech, crunch!). Be sure to remove your signs after the sale is over. Good luck with your sale!
Put a sign on a telegraph pole at the nearest main road and then on a few street poles leading to your yard and lots of balloons to show where it is at the front of your home.
