How can you repel japanese beetles from your garden?

Question:these things swarm around my house at this time of year. Those bag-a-bug things don't work too well. HELP

Answers:
the second answer is good. it's really tough to keep them away, if not impossible. I use systemic insecticide on my crepe myrtles and crabapples- they LOVE to eat those. they still eat the leaves, but it kills them before they can lay eggs.

I try to keep them at bay in my yard by applying grub-ex in the spring. the natural approach is to use Milky Spore nematodes in your soil. the milky spore infects the beetle grub and kills them.. they can't become adults.

sorry- no good news for you.

Chemical controls: Diazinon and Sevin sprays will take down the adults. Be sure to follow the label directions EXACTLY and use care when spraying ANY poisons.

Actually, bag-a-bugs make it worse. They attract MORE beetles to your property.

If you want a conventional product (poison) look at some Bayer products. They make a number of imacloprid-based products that you pour into the ground around the base of trees and shrubs. When the beetles eat the leaves, they die quickly.

You can also try "Bug Free Backyard" type products that will repel mosquitos and somewhat repel beetles.

Also, watch your lawn. Japanese Beetles start life as white grubs that are likely destroying your yard by the end of June.

Now if you want a fun solution? Guinea Fowl. They aren't nearly as destructive as chickens, make for reliable guards (albeit noisy ones) and are good for the yard. They'll keep everything the can reach relatively bug-free. (National Wildlife Federation gets credit for this idea.)
Diazinon is against the law now,,,not sold in Illinois anymore.

Why do you want to get rid of them? They don't eat the plants..they eat aphids and such...they are good for the garden..but, I know, they do bite and they do stink and you can get too many...and they are prolific and can get into the house through the smallest of spaces and hibernate...

Sorry, I was thinking of Oriental Lady Bugs, not Japanese Beetles...

We get them here after the soy beans have been harvested,,it's too bad they weren't researched before they were brought in to control the soy aphids...
i feel your pain...they love my roses! i mix a spray bottle full of water, a tbsp of olive oil, and a squirt of dish soap and spray it on my flowers (also good on my produce) in the evening. spray once a week after watering or after it rains.
Buy a model of the USS Midway. That should keep them scared away, but you may have to deal with an occassional kamikaze raid.
lay out some bonding strip and the'll stick 2 it
