I use schultz liquid cactus food and that seems to work great. I live in Michigan and keeping my cacti indoors during winter without a growthlight did not lead to any problems. However you might want to try the fertilizer and a growlight as neither of those will hurt and will speed up growth considerably.
Well, have you considered therapy and maybe a SSRI drug such as Zoloft or Celexa? Just don't mix these drugs with an MAOI.
Cacti can grow strangely sometimes. Most likely it is just a defect that was present but not visible in the cactus when it was small but now that the cactus is bigger the defect is more visible.
I have a grandfather cactus that I've had for years who started out small, then all of a sudden he got about 2 1/2 feet tall and the bottom where the soil is started to turn brown but he kept growing taller and finally sprouted two smaller versions of himself at his base. He never fell over and is still growing, so I have no idea what his problem is/was. haha
What you might want to do is get the next size or two sizes up for the pot, put some rocks in the bottom of the new pot over the drainage holes so they won't get clogged with compacted soil, get new specialized cactus soil, replant the cactus and water once a week. After you water you might want to put it in a window or somewhere it'll get natural light.
