Mares tails how do i get rid of them?
Question:weve got these weeds that are known as mares tails they look like minute xmas trees. the more we dig them out the more they come back & they seem immune to weedkillers like roundup. anyone out there with some idea on getting rid of these blooming things
Answers:
Someone on here had a good tip a while back; crush them slightly before using Roundup, because they have a waxy coating that makes them resistant to herbicides, and crushing them helps the herbicide get into their system.
They are persistant, and you just have to keep at it.
Use roundup but add a good squeeze of washing up liquid to mix seems to make liquid stay on plants break ing down waxy coating and trample or crush plants as well to get it into stems
Do you mean horsetail?

Some tips on that link.
Sodium Chlorate.Kills anything and everything for up to 6 months.
We also have this problem, every year it gets worse. Will try the round up and crushing method.
I personally have had trouble with bindweed which is far worse. None of the usual sprays has any effect. However I have managed to eliminate most of it by using Sodium Chlorate from DOFF. It is dry like sugar.
Do not remove the weed. Merely place a teaspoonful at the base of each root and wait for rain, or wet with a small amount of water. This will kill the whole plant including the root system, which may be extensive. Beware as this will sour the ground for other plants.
