Hey Gardeners . . . I cut down a sick apple tree a few years back.?
Question:And from it's stump is growing some fresh branches (life springs eternal). I would like an apple tree in another place. Do you think I could saw this stump even with the ground and transplant the whole thing to another place without damaging the new little baby apple trees.
Answers:
Hello
No, the reason the sapplings are coming off the stump is because the root system is still alive, sawing off the stump will destroy it's nutrient uptake. The best bet yet not guaranteed is to purchase some Root-Tone cut the sappling off soak the end of the sappling in water dust it with Root-Tone and plant it in a pot (roughly the first six inches). If it's possible the roots will sprout and there you have your apple tree to be planted in the fall.

You would have to dig some of the roots out before you transplant in order for it to survive.
No, The tree stump will have roots that are to big to transplant. Leave the tree that is growing from the stump, and plant another sapling instead. We had 3 apple orchards on our farm. When you cut down a tree, it usually always sprouts another one from the roots. This goes for most trees. We cut down a huge pine tree and two yrs later another tree popped up from the stump. It's a beautiful tree now. If you try to cut the new growth off this stump, you will more than likely kill it.
Even if you could, and I like Greenman's answer the best, you don't know if the apple tree was growing on rootstock that it was grafted to, so there is a chance that the tree you would get would not be the same as the apple tree you cut down.
