Different trees have different requirements for growth, find out what type of tree it is and just look it up on a botanical site and that should help...

This will tell you everything you need to know about Bonsai trees
Depends on where you live. If you live in the desert then they need shade in summer. If you live by the coast they can have sun all day long. Ideal is good morning sun with some afternoon shade. Most of all they need to be outdoors.
lucky you! those are neat trees, you can shape them into almost anything! Im not an expert on trees, but i would have to say that they can grow in sunlight, because i see alot of people that have them in their front yards, and they are growing beautifully, and sun is always hitting them. Good luck with your tree, and remember you should always water it if you want it to live long.
what kind of tree is it?

some trees prefer full sun, while some prefer partial shade.

Until you determine what type it is, keep it in partial shade.

also, no matter what type it is, make sure that you keep it outside during the summer. Most bonai need to be kept outdoors year round, but some (tropical bonsai) do need to be brought in in colder weather.

here is a good site where you can post pics of the tree and get expert advice - some of the leading experts on bonsai care post here. The second link provides various articles on bonsai care and techniques.

Also, something to check - are their rocks on top of the soil? If so check to see if they are glued on, if they are remove them immediately.
