I am a manager with scotts lawnservice, and fall is the best time have your lawn dethatched or power raked. I would recommend having your lawn aerated over having it dethatched. Dethatching does alot of harm to your lawn, and also thins out your lawn leaving your lawn exposed to weed infestation, possible disease and insect activity. And raking your lawn with a rake, will do an alright job, but what i would recommend is an aeration instead of dethaching. Dethatching pulls up alot of dead matter, but also alot of good grass. You want a layer of thatch, what this does is shades the crowns of the grass blades, so that they can hold moisture amoung other things. But when that layer gets over an inch it prevents nutrients, air and water from reaching the soil. But an aertion does a great job. So what you can do is find your local store that rents equipment and rent an aerator. It is very very physical but you can do it and talk to your neighbors maybe you can in it together and bang out both your lawns and cut the cost in half. It should only be like 30-50 bucks to rent the thing. But let me know if you have any other questions i can answer.
in the early spring is the best time to Thatch the yard before you mow the first time.
