Question:Since grass doesn't appear to grow it's own seeds.

The bottom of the soft lawn grass becomes very stiff and straw-like. Not soft at all.
Come to my house and see how lazy I am with lawn work in the far corner of my lawn.

If you let your grass grow long enough it will produce seeds
It does grow seeds-- it's just most people cut it before they have a chance to grow out of the top. Refrain from cutting a small patch for a while and you'll see.
