Fast growing shrubs for normal to alkaline heavy clay in the UK: Aucuba Japonica, Berberis, Escallonia, Mahonia.
For acid soil & happy in clay: Camelia & Pieris
For ground cover in ALL conditions Vinca Major & Vinca Minor.

You can get all of these easily at any garden centre - there are variation in colour & size & care considerations but you can find that out on the lables of the plants!
