Do you know about calla lilies?
Question:If so, how does a calla lily bloom? Do the leaves roll up and become the bloom. The leaves on my lilies are rolling up does this mean they are dying?
Answers:
Love those lilies. Bloom stem unfolds from between leaves. After blooming it folds back up. I usually cut them back and bring them in after the first hard frost. I start watering them about Ash Wednesday and put them out when hard frost disappears. If your in a warmer clime--you can leave them in the ground and out all year long. They can take frost, but now freezing temps.
No, the leaves don't turn into flowers. These will come up separately from the center of the plant, although the flower stalks look just like the leaf stalks at first. The rolling of your leaves is probably due to insects, most likely caterpillars. A number of bugs do this trick to provide shelter for themselves. Gently unroll a leaf and you will probably find the little guys living inside. If so, and the infestation isn't too advanced, just removing the affected leaves can sometimes cure the problem. Be careful how you dispose of them so they don't spread. More likely you will need some bug spray to get rid of your unwelcome visitors.
