Best climbing plant, in the shade?

Question:The fence at the very back of my yard is chain link and the people behind us are really dirty and from the street behind us you can see our back yard. Does anyone know of a climbing plant that will do well in Northern California and in mostly shade? I am looking for a vine that will look nice and grow fast. Thanks so much!

Answers:
Hops is a great plant for part to full shade. A hops vine has leaves similar in shape to a grape vine and will grow a foot or so in a day. By the end of the season they can be as much as thirty feet or more. And they get those great little unique 'blossoms' that look like a tiny green opened up pine cone.

The drawback is they die back to the ground every winter, but in your area that should only leave you about three months or so with no cover.

The other choice is ivy. Some varieties are evergreen, but they don't grow so fast. Once established, though, it'll be a full-time screen all year round.

Check with a good, reputable nursery in your area. They'll have lots of suggestions.

I am not too sure about N. Cal. but climbing hydrangea, dropmore honeysuckle, wisteria and virginia creepers sound like a good possibility.
Hands down, it's ivy. Slow growing tho'
clematis, wisteria both flower or an ivy for all green
Clematis would be perfect.
Virginia creeper (turns red in Autumn)

Beans??
Honeysuckle. It grows and spreads so quickly it is considered a nuisance vine in many areas. It tolerates shade quite well and it smells good! I have honeysuckle vines on all my fences and they do indeed hide your property from dirty nasty neighbors.
well, this may not help you any but apparently the best climbing plant for shade in kansas is poisen ivy, and i cant get rid of it, and am also highly allergic..but roses(most) will vine easily and are pretty hard to kill.
I like morning glorys'..here is a link to mine growing on my bamboo fence i built..about 2 months growing here..they got thicker...near the bottom of page 11 here..
