What is wrong with my silver maples?
Question:i had a silver maple growing for 2 years and it started to grow another main trunk. i dug up the tree and cut the main root to make 2 seperate trees, now the leaves are withering up and crumpled and look purple. it had just started to leaf when i did this in early may.
Answers:
leave em alone, water em deeply for the next few days or so, then cut back to once a week(deeply). they'll recover from the shock in a few days!
Maples often grow split trunks. When you dug them up, you probably severed a main root. When you want to transplant or split, you want to try to do it before the leaves come out. Sorry to say, you most likely killed it, won't get one, let alone 2 out of it.
Good luck.
You cannot divide trees by root division. Sorry, but you have most likely killed the tree. One of the parts may grow, but never very well. In addition, you couldn't have chosen a worse time of year to do what you tried to do. Dividing plants and shrubs that you can divide in this manner is usually done in the fall.
