Our Lettuce is over 2ft tall! Is it safe to eat?

Question:We grew a lettuce from seed, and it is now over 2ft tall. We didn't know when the right time to dig it up and eat it was... is it too late now? If it is too late, what options do we have?

Answers:
Lettuce also reseeds itself. Let it go to seed and you will see new plants coming soon. Lettuce (depending on variety) is a cool weather plant, meaning in the heat of the summer some types of lettuce bolt. It's the heat that causes them to bolt. I plant different varieties that are ready at different times of the season so we can eat lettuce all summer. Roman and Head lettuce varieties are good because they mature later in the season, and leaf lettuce varieties are early summer plants.

Your lettuce has bolted. This means that it has finished its vegetative stage of growth and is now starting to flower. Maybe you can see the buds starting to appear at the apical point? It seems that you left it too long. There is only a short window where the plant is edible before it bolts. Once the plant has started to flower, nutrients are diverted from the leaves to the more active flowering parts and so the quality of the leaves begins to detereorate. You'll just have to start again.
you must have very large rabbits
Normally eat it when it's the size you see it in the store.
it isn't going to hurt you,but it will be awfully bitter,or tastless. you can cut the lettuce when it get's to 4-5 inches,and it will grow back,if watered.
It sounds as if it bolted. You should eat it depending on the variety when it is about 6-8 inches tall. I wouldn't say that it is not safe to eat but will probably be bitter. Try it! If it is bitter you might try steaming it or sauteing with a little garlic and oil.
scary lettuce
the real queustion is.......... it a WORLD RECORD!!! prolly not but its safe no doubt but it is going to tastye nasty
if there were no pesticides used and atmospheric particles have been thoroughly washed off ,you should be fine..enjoy
safe = yes
taste = bitter
current plants are now seed plants
replant now

lettuce grows fast. You can plant a new crop near to old ones right away (old ones will later have seed to dry & replant next year). When it gets 4-6", break off the leaves (I pinch the leaves off with my fingernail near stem) & new leaves will fill in the empty spots.
if it tastes good to you, eat it
You probably planted romaine lettuce and that is the normal height.Enjoy it's wonderful taste.
It's still edible though it could be a bit tough and the taste not that nice.Plant some again and don't let them grow too tall this time.
