Which Jasmines are best to grow in an Indian garden?
Question:Namaste ~
Please could you tell me:
** how large do the bushes grow?
** do they require much water or fertilizer or care of any sort ...?
Answers:
By jasmine I presume you mean Cestrum spp - Cestrum diurnum, cestrum parqui and cestrum nocturnum are popular varieties. A mature bush could be easily 15 ft high or more. Some of them are climbing, or the branches tend to trail so you could train them on a trellis or pergola. Regular watering and full sun is required. In India they grow quite well without fertilizer and in some places are wild or like weeds. Quisqualis indica, the rangoon creeper - madhumalati is not a cestrum but nonetheless a fragrant, beautiful creeper easy and fast to grow with profuse flowering of changeable red and cream flowers. Doesnt require any great care other than occasional pruning.
Jasmine finds a very important place both in the perfume industry and flower market. Research work on standardization of agro-technology in jasmine was carried in different parts of India; notable among these are the IIHR, Bangalore and the TNAU, Coimbatore.
A complete agro-technology has been worked out for Jasminum grandiflorum at the IIHR, Bangalore, through large number of field trials, fertilized with 100 g N, 150 g P2O5 and 100 g K2O/plan/year over a basal dose of 10 kg of FYM. Among the defolians, pentachlorophenol at 3,000 ppm and potassium iodide at 4,000 ppm have been identified for their beneficial effect on growth and flowering of J. grandiflorum.
