I have 2 small maple "bushes" in my front yard. I cannot find out what they are or how to take care of them.

Question:My web searches do not find anything and my landscape guy is not very bright. They have branches coming from the base and are 2 years old and about 3 feet high. They are not Japanese maples. I would like to know if I need to prune them into bushes or trees. They are planted close to the front porch and does not allow much for width or height. Thanks to any green thumbs.:)

Answers:
cut a small branch and take it to your local nursery...someone should be able to help you out.

the branches growing the base are suckers-a result of stress. prune them and replant futher away from the foundation with plenty of soil amendment
Since your calling it a bush, but you have no picture. Look up Acer 'ginnala' or hedge maple. This is the only true maple that grows in this form. If it's not correct - then it might be a type of viburnum. 'opulus'
The person that said the branches growing from the base are suckers has no way of knowing that without seeing the plant so don't cut anything off until you identify it correctly.
You say they are 'maple' and yet that you don't know what they are. What indicates to you that they are maple? You say they are two years old, so you must have had them planted or planted them yourself to know their age. I agree with the suggestion to take a sample to a local nursery for identification but you don't need to take a whole branch, only a leaf. Once you know what it is, you will be better able to determine whether it needs pruning or not, moved or not and where best it could be planted. You need to hire a new landscaper. :)
