How can i get my grass to grow under my vergeside gum tree?

Question:

Answers:
Gum trees are great survivors and they take every bit of nutrient out of the soil around them. Some lawn fertilisers will kill them so be very careful what you use to fertilise. I would top dress the area with well rotted manure (to replenish to soil) and water well (the gum will take most of the water as well). If the grass is not going to work, perhaps a ground covering grevillea or two planted at the base will solve your bare ground problem. You will still need to enrich the soil whatever you plant.

Gum trees are like Pine trees - they acidify the soil.
If you thrown some 2:3:2 down that should neutralise it. But why not simply put acid-loving plants like Azaleas in under it?
