What is the best way to lure and find small worms in soil?

Red wigglers are naturally found in abundance under piles of fresh manure - they just seem drawn to it. I suppose you could always ask a farmer to go through their manure, but seriously if you want to do some vermicomposting then that would be a free source of worms, versus buying them over the internet! Goodluck!
Soapy water will bring them to the surface. A good way to do this is to divert your washing machine drain to an area in your yard. This will not harm your grass in the area, unless you leave it there permanently. Move it to different locations and check the area 10 to 15 minutes after it absorbs into the ground. If you have worms, they will come up.
