Your bleeding heart can be divided, but it should be at least 4 years old and divide it in the fall would be best.
My experience with bleeding hearts is that they don't like to be transplanted or divided. . .they can but they do go into shock especially if it is not dormant.
I transplanted on in the spring when it was still growing and I almost killed it, so use caution when transplanting and dividing. Good luck.
If it is large enough you can usually just use a shovel to cut off a piece or portion (roots included of course!) . replant and water well.
by seperating the roots. also you can root this plant fairly easy, so you can have like a whole bunch of them if you do so desire.
If it is a three year old or more plant, dig up, separate/divide roots, and replant. I would do it more towards the fall.
do this in the spring lift the p;ant and divide remove as many rootlets as you require but please do this gently as the plant will not take rough handling
