First, you want to design your idea on paper. Then, mark the area you would like to edge with white spray paint. The easiest way to edge is with a gas powered landscape edger. This machine will make a nice edge for your edging and is much easier than doing it all by hand with a shovel. You can rent one from your local harware rental store. The edging will lay in the ground very nice and then you drive metal stakes into it to secure it in place.
I've never heard of lawn edging installs, I assume you mean bed edging because if you're thinking of edging your entire lawn you will hate life installing it and then again trying to string trim around it.
