What are possible causes of blemishes on tomatoes?

Question:I have a tomato plant growing on my balcony, and when the tomatoes come in, they have these dark brownish-black spots/dents on them. I'm pretty sure they arent bruises (because the plant is in a no-traffic area), and they seem to grow with the plant (i've seen the beginnings of some spots on the other tomatoes while they are still green). any idea what they could be and how to get rid of them?

Answers:
If the spots are at the bottom of the tomatoes, it's called blossom end rot and is caused by a lack of calcium and uneven watering. It's most common with the first few tomatoes of the season because the plant is still getting established.

There is a June 19th blog entry at our website that discusses the problem-

pesticides maybe, get plant protection spray and see what happens
Your tomatoes could have been the victim of timy little bugs making a snack out of them.

Just cut that little section off and you're good!

C'mon! You can't expect them ALL to be cherry tomatoes!
