An onion in my kitchen sprouted, so I put it in a pot with soil. How can I raise it?
Question:Is it right to put it in a pot of soil? How can I raise the onion properly? Is it even possible?
Answers:
You will not get any more onions from planting an onion that has started to sprout. You are better off using it immediately. Planting it in soil might give you a flowering plant, but all of the onion will be consumed in producing the flowering plant.
Onions are biennials, they flower and produce seeds in their second year. Most commercial onions are grown from seed and harvested in their first year.
An interesting experiment for the kids, but not very productive.

It is better to put it outside in flower garden or a bigger flower pot. We do this every year with onions that have sprouted.
Just stick them in the dirt and soon you will have fresh green onions.
put it a pot and bury the white onion part with the roots about 3 inches down, water once a week and keep it in full sun! no fertilizer is needed! sit back and watch as it grows! give it about three months (maybe less) and u've got u some onions!
