How to make a simple birdbath?

Question:I have firewood laying around, what else is needed?

Answers:
Here is an idea that my husband and I came up with a few years ago. I had some firewood that we had not split yet and it was rather odd looking oak with holes in it from a woodpecker. He chiseled out a section in the end of the piece of wood and made enough room for me to lay one of those plastic saucers for potted plants in it. I used the harder plastic ones that look like terra cotta. I then placed a rock in the center of the saucer to keep it from blowing out of the wood piece. It works great and looks really natural in my flower beds. It seems like it took alittle while for the birds to get used to it but now I have 3 of them and I am always looking for cool stumps that I can use in this same manner. You will just need to make sure that you keep fresh water in it and the plastic is easy to remove for cleaning. I normally have to add water every other day or so unless it has rained alot and I normally just bring the saucer in to clean them about once a week unless of couse they look like they need it more often. This is such a simple plan and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as your bird friends.

I made my bird bath with a large terra cotta pot (turned upside down) and a large saucer. Spray with the clear acrylic sealer. Very cheap and simple. Rub-on decals are a great alternative to fancy painting and can be found at most walmarts and craft stores.
I can't think of how to use firewood to make one. How about a big, shallow decorative plastic dish and put it on a pedestal? We haven't had very good luck with ceramic bird baths. Our dog and other critters have jumped on them to get a drink and have broken several of them. The bowl is about $25.
Pound stick into ground. Get an old hubcap. Drill small hole in it.. Screw it onto stick. Add water.
the terra cotta pot idea is wut i was gonna say.
Yes, the first answer is a good one, about turning the pot upside down and using the saucer on top. I read about this in a book about birds in your yard. Only problem I can see with it is if there are cats around because it is very low to the ground.
My fiance and I went to a Re-Store. They have items from houses that have been renovated or torn down. We picked up a few sinks. They work great we used metal pipe to support them. Get a drain plug. They are super easy to drain and keep clean.
