Subscribe to High Times; it usually has articles about growing "tomatos" using hydroponics.
Make sure you use more liquid plant food than it calls for on the bottle; plants seem to grow much better after I feed them!

Either one is good...tomatoes are generally happy plants anywhere you put them.
