Help my dog's urine is killing my grass!?
Question:Is there any way I can fix the dead grass patches where my dog as urinated?
Also my grass isn't as green and lively looking as my neighbour's. How do they do it?
My yard looks terrible compared to everyone else's perfect lawn. Are there any pet friendly garden products that I can use to make my lawn loOk as gOod as theirs? lol =)
Answers:
spread garden gypsum over the affected spots. the gypsum offsets the salt content (ammonia) of the urine. it also helps break up clay and contributes suphur and calcium as minor plant nutrients.
pet friendly grass is the problem, there is no such thing. pets are hard on a lawn. to keep your female from killing the grass you must water the spot she pees in every time she pees ! or you can give her 2 table spoons of ketchup for every feeding. it neutralizes the high nitrogen in her urine. my pup wont touch ketchup, i have to water
You need to apply lime to the spots. The lime nutrilizes the acid from the urea in the dog's urine. Once you bring the pH of the soil back up the grass can thrive. You can even reseed and apply lime at the same time.
Put a tablespoon of Lipton (or other brand) brewed hot tea in the dog's water bowl every morning. I have no idea why such a small amount of tea in the water could affect the ph balance of the dog's urine, but it WORKS! I have three standard poodles that were ruining my lawn until I tried this, and now there are no more brown and yellow dead patches!
I give my dog tums/rolaids,this neutrilizes his urine. This is a great side effect of getting rid of his tear stains.
Great lawn - scotts works awesome, but you have to cut it more often since it grows like crazy.
I cut the grass once a week and let the mulch build up to make the lawn retain more water and be soft to walk on.
There's products in the pet food stores for dog urine spots. Also don't let the dog go in exactly the same place every time. Water right after the dog goes.
The green lawn people probably waste water and use chemicals. look for environmentally safe products in your garden store, safer for you and your dog! Your lawn can look at least nearly as great and you know it's not toxic!
Unfortunately this is the price that we pay when we have dogs.
The only way to save your lawn is to take your dog for walks.
You can water the lawn to wash down the urine right away but this is only a temporary thing to camouflage the smell of the urine.
