Putting top soil + sod in backyard?
Question:Hi,
I will put sod in a part of my backyard but first I need to have it dug because the area is very very very bumpy and the soil seems to be very bad.
I want put a layer of top soil + the sod... by how much should I dig the area ? I have been told 1 feet... isn't that too much ?
What thickness of top soil should I go for ?
What is the regular thickness of sod by the way ?
Thanks for your help,
Fab

The proper way to proceed is to get a machine with a blade to level out the existing lumpy soil.
Rake out the debris and rock.
Install 6 inches of topsoil/sand/compost in the bed areas and plain topsoil on the lawn areas.
Roll it once over to make sure it's even then installl the sod. (Usually has about an inch +/- below the grass roots.) Roll the sod and water every day for 21 days. Instant beautiful lawn.
You just need a few inches. Use the topsoil to even the ground. The root layer in the sod itself is only probably an inch. You will need probably 3-6 inches for roots to grow.
your sod will grow in any soil if it has enough sunlight and water..remember..too much water is better than not enough...also.your new sod needs a good supply of a nitrogen based fertilizer at first..digging and turning soil to a depth of one foot is overdoing it.4 to 5 inches is sufficient...good luck.you didnt indicate the type of sod you are putting down.ie.St. Augustine.Tall Fescue..Hybrid Bermuda.remember.new sod is not conducive to animals...especially young large dogs..
