It sounds like the soil isn't draining properly and causing the plant to rot. Watermelon needs full sun, moist but not damp soil. I grew up on a farm and we just planted them and they just grew.
Here is a site that gives a lot of tips for growing watermelon that I found interesting, especially the radishes. We did plant radishes next to the watermelon vines and now I know why LOL: http://www.ehow.com/how_1993_grow-waterm...
Hope this helps for next years planting and good luck in a watermelon seed spitting contest!
Water Melon should be gron on mounds, if they are on wet ground they will rot from underneath if they don't get sufficient water they will grow only small if the plant does not have enough water it will pull it from the melon, then they will dry up and rot, if there is high nitrogen in the soild the water will not go into the plant, if you have used a lot of fertilizer you may have fertilizer burn (this is how we learn) which will sometimes start with killing the fruit and may kill the entire plant what veriety are you growing there are some that are small more of a novelty than a BBQ side dish, get to know the locals there are some serious melon growers in N Florida try congo they are good and predictable nice big sweet melons
Maybe they need to be away from the moist soil. I heard that you can use the styrofoam trays that you get when you buy meat at the store, to put under the melons to protect them from the soil damp. You may want to punch some holes in the tray to allow water to disperse.
