What plants grow very fast and into a bush or small tree?
Question:i have moved into a unit and i have 9 big pots on the balaconie. i want to put things that grow large and big in one year
Answers:
Hi.
There is a great book called "Fast Plants" by Sue Fisher, with some fantastic suggestions.
For evergreen in sun: Leyland cypress. They can be positioned in pots to form a screen for privacy.
For fast shrubs:
Sambucus, (elder), which comes in a variety of cultivars now from deep burgundy to gold.
Salix, (willow), also some very pretty varieties, especially the Japanese dappled willow.
Rosa Rugosa, (rugosa rose), very bushy roses with lots of flowers.
Physocarpus opulifolius, (ninebark), a nice shrub, again lots of new varieties including 'summer wine'.
For perennials:
miscanthus: this family of grasses is tall and elegant and looks lovely on a balcony in the wind. Some of the best are "silberfeder", "morning light"
to this I add actually, any of the tall ornamental grasses with tassles.
For annuals/tender perennials(must be replace yearly)
purple fountain grass
taller fuschia
coleus
potato vine
(all of the above look great combined in pots, with the purple grass or fuschia in center, and the coleus as filler and the potato vine as trailer, (blackie and margarita varieties are nice).
With pots on terrace, you must get good potting soil to hold moisture and be sure to water regularly. The exposure on a balcony will cause dehydration from sun and wind. Also be sure to fertilize, since the plants are totally dependent upon you.
I could go on and on.but the shrubs I mention are fairly easy and the grass is fairly easy.
Weeds. No, seriously...weeds! I left one untouched while mowing the lawn because it was rooted directly under a fence. Next thing I know, I have a new tree outside my 3rd floor bedroom window.
I would recomend boxwood, a shrub, or dwarf alberta spruce, an evergreen or if you want something really big aolvberta spruce
old-fashioned snowball viburnum. extremely fast grower.
you can also put arborvitae.
do not put dwarf Alberta spruce... keyword there... dwarf.
Crepe Myrtle
ficus...
