Good Luck!

if you do not have any small children around playing on the lawn, you could cut some peices of rose bush stems with lots of spikes on them and lay them in the places the cats like to come. This stops them as they do not like gettting hurt.
moth balls they hate

"pet away" spray

sprinkle pepper around
Your average domestic moggy runs like hell at the slightest whiff of lion dung, so if you have a friendly neighbourhood zoo.
ugh i had the same problem, the neighborhoods cats all converged on my property... those water-filled guns really helped alot (cats don't like being squirted by water). i also bought a dog.
The cats are in your yard to establish territory and to dig where the digging is easy (so that they can establish territory). So I see two ways to proceed:

1) Create Alpha Animal Presence
You want to let the cats know that there is an animal that is bigger, badder and more alpha than they are, and it's territory is your yard. Yes, you can usually buy animal feces from a zoo. It smells horrible, but small amounts of cougar poo placed on the perimiter may help. This works well for keeping deer away. Another idea is to use spray on, large predatory animal urine. I've got a link below to buying inexpensive coyote urine.

I'd also spray those @$%*$& cats with a high pressure garden hose every time I saw them. Hopefully they would think that coyote pee/cougar poo belonged to ME!

2) Make It Hard To Dig
- Add spiky things right under the dirt (the rose thorn idea someone else had was great!) See my second link below.
- Place a mesh under the dirt (cheaper than the idea above)
- Set a bunch of spring mouse traps and lay sheets of newspaper on top. Walking on the paper will set the traps, which will make noise when they slam on the paper, and the cats will run away in terror but the layer of paper will prevent injury.
You will have to stake the corners of the paper down so it doesn't blow away. You may have to set this trap a few times, but I bet it works well.

I've also read that this exotic flowering bulb works to deter moles, rodents and cats (it however, does not deter slugs. Drat.) The bulb... well... when you smell the bulb it will all make sense to you.

I've also added links to a few other cat repelling products that I found.
Take and sprinkle red pepper where they go to.That will deter them and any other pests. It will not hurt them, they will just scatter.
