Dog pee huring my Bermuda grass - what to do?

Question:I have a golden retriever who is hurting my new sodded back yard when he whizzes on it. What can I do to help with the brown patches it leaves other than just let the grass grow back over it later?

Answers:
in general it is female dog urine that burns the grass. In the past when I transplanted my houseplants to larger pots, I would put the old potting soil over the burnt spots & the grass would grow back. I have read that if your spray beer over the spots, it helps it recover faster. (the standing joke is the grass comes back half cut) I haven't tried using beer as I would rather drink it. we have a female dog & have gladly given her a portion of the yard--we don't worry about the condition of the grass in that area cuz there's not much to be done except keep it clean & mow it

Shoot the dog.lol. Try having your dog go somewhere else, or you can try keeping a steady stream of fertilizer on it. Hope this helps!

My parents had this same problem with their new sod and their poodle. They've had their sod in for over two years now and it still browns if the dog hits it. They try not to let him go on the grass at all anymore, but when it's not preventable they water that area thoroughly right after. Keep in mind, you're talking about a 15 lb. poodle vs. a golden retriever, so watering might not cut it. Maybe you could find a less conspicuous place and just take him to that same area every time?
Change the dogs dog food. Ask your vet for a recommendation. Some dog foods can make the dogs urine burn the grass. If you can change the dogs diet you can change the problem.
It's not an instant solution. You have to be careful with pets when changing their food. It can take a few weeks to change over their food to something that is suitable for both your lawn and the dog.
