Starting a new lawn?
Question:Hello Everyone,
I recently tilled up my backyard which was full of rocks and a rugged Colorado landscape. I went down to Lowe's and bought some fertilizer and Kentucky blue grass seed. After, put straw down, is their anything else I should be doing?
Answers:
Kentucky Blue performs well in Colorado, so it looks like you picked the right grass, but the wrong time to plant it. Grasses do their best growing in the fall and early spring.
You will need to keep it well watered. If you are using sprinklers, set out some cups so that you can see how long to run your sprinklers. You wil want to give the new lawn 1/4 to 1/2 inches of water each day.
Chances are that the grass won't come up evenly, but don't let that worry you. Don't be too anxious to mow it, wait until the grass gets to be 4" or so in the taller areas. Mow right over the straw and reseed in any areas that need it.
If your soil had a lot of clay, think about spreading some gypsum over the lawn in the fall.

Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
water thoroughly every evening, don 't walk on it at all
water every day for first week, every 3rd day the second week, twice a week after that till established.
Watering 2 times a day for at least 60 minutes (you want to put about a 1/4 inch of water a day) everyday until grass starts taking root. once the grass has grown to about 3 inches you can reduce to once a day everyday until grass is growing and roots have taken hold.refrain from trying to maw grass until it is full coverage and cut at highest elevation setting to allow grass to shade its own roots...will help maintain healthier grass and require less water to maintain. watering should be towards sunset and before sunrise.
