Could be alot of things. If you are watering alot, it could be getting root rot. It could be stress from heat. It could be not getting enough water down bellow the root zone. Try and use Miracle grow or some thing like it. Once every 2 weeks thru growing season.
it could be because of too much water,
or you stunded it which means that u probably took off some roots that were important.
you could of also gotten a sick tree.
or Mady the dirt isn't nutritious enough.
I would dig a moat around the ball you planted and see if you can tell if it is spreading correctly. It sounds like it is not getting enough nutrients, IE. the roots aren't spreading out of the ball yet. You could buy some really good soil (3 bags?) and pull some holes into the burlap sack. Spread the really good soil around the now exposed ball and cover with ground soil. Add some miracle grow quick start and see what happens. The worst that could happen is it doesn't fix it. I can't make it worse!
Also, make sure you planted it where you should have... ie. shade vs sun.
Good answers all. Also consider the soil you put it in (clay, sand, etc.) Ph is rather important to fruit trees.Cherries like 6.0-6.5. Drainage is also critical.Soils are made up of four basic ingredients: mineral elements, pore space, organic matter, and other items consisting mainly of living organisms including fungi, bacteria, and nematodes. One classification of soils is based upon the mineral part of soil and consists of four sizes of particles. Clay particles are the smallest, followed by silt, sand, and gravel. The USDA has devised another system of classifying soil particles. In this system soil is divided into seven categories: clay, silt, and five sizes of sand. The pore spaces in a soil are normally filled with air or water. As the amount of water increases, the amount of air must therefore decrease. The pores of a well-drained soil have certain physical characteristics that, after a period of heavy rainfall, enable water to rapidly drain away and allow air to return to its original percentage. If you are watering frequently and the hole does not perk (drain), the tree's roots will rot. Another factor is the ball. If it was in wire the wire must be removed. DO NOT let anyone tell you otherwise! If it was b and b'd (burlap) the twine was probably nylon and MUST be removed. You may hear people say the roots will go thru or the wire will rust-BS. They will girdle the tree and it will DIE. Go online and hit Penn State or Cornells ag/ coop sites and research fruit trees. http://tfpg.cas.psu.edu/98.htm
Our presidents aren't still chopping down cherry trees and then being honest about it, are they?
It could be something as simple as adding some fertilizer. Check out www.1800TOPSOIL.com to see if they have a member servicing your area. If they do, give them a call to see what's goos for your climate. These guys are national and I've used them in two states. They're good and fair and they usually deliver. Good luck!
