How can I tell if I found an old flint tool in my backyard?

Question:I found 2 rocks that look like flint handaxes I've seen in museams. Is there anyway to tell what they are?

Answers:
Take them to a local college and find their geology or archaeology department. They can tell you. Also, look in your phone book for rock shops. You might have one. They sell geodes, fossils, crystals, that kind of thing.

The previous posts about striking it with metal will probably break the axe unless you know exactly how to strike it.

strike it with a piece of metal to see if it makes a spark
you'll have to take it to a museum to get it checked.
flint sparks easily rub it with metal. find a local natural history museum, send them photos. good luck
Take them to a local antique store or Historical Society that has someone (possibly) that knows something or can lead you to someone that does. You might find out the answer that way.
