Well answerer number one (you keep changing your name), I must disagree. After all, I was able to take a year off without working because of the success we had in PA. And now, even in our first year in VT, we make enough to pay the bills.
Anyway James, you won't get rich over night, and it takes a lot of hard work and responibility, but if you are committed, you can be successful.
It would be best to have some money to invest, or some credit at least to buy some decent equipment. Don't plan on quitting your current job right away. You have to build up your business. Be happy to get 1-2 customers to start, cut them during your "free" time. If you do a good job, you will be surprised at how many calls you will get. The last 7 years in PA, we did no advertising, all new customers came from "word-of-mouth".
Spring is always the best time to pick up customers, this time of year is hard. But what you can do now, is start planning. Make sure you have a vehicle that can pull a trailer (I've seen some guys go without a trailer - load the mower in the back of a pickup, but it can be hard that way). Figure out what kind of machine you want, and how you are going to pay for it (XMarks are great but you're looking at over 8K new, maybe go with used?). You will also need a good trimmer and blower for sure.
Your best chance at being successful is to be RESPONSIBLE. Always return phone calls, and do your best, you actually have to CARE about your customers.
I think I'm writing a novel here, feel free to email me if you would like more specific advice. Good luck to you!
yea, get a new line a business...not much success involved with lawn service
Lawn Service meaning lawn mowing? Lawn service meaning lawn care and weedcontrol, etc. Sit down and determine what services you will offer. Will you offer mowing, trimming, blower service, leaf removal, dethatching, etc. etc.etc.etc. Will you start with used equipment or new? You must build into your rates equipment maintenance, gasoline, your time, etc. What will you haul all this equipment around in or on? You will have to look into insurance for your business. These are just a few things you have to think about. I have two friends that are in the Lawn care-mowing business. They do 22 lawns per week and take in after expenses over $300.00 which they split. Good luck.
