Summer flowers and early fall flowers?
Question:Which ones can i plant? Also, is it too late to plant cantaloupe? I am in northern Illinois!
Answers:
Cantalope might be a reach - it needs a moderately long growing season, and you're about a month behind. However, it certainly wouldn't cost much to try! I'd go for it! The worst that can happen is your plant won't produce before the first frost. But a LOT can happen anytime you plant something. And it's within the range to produce a fruit - if you start now, and conditions are good, and there's not a freakish early frost where you are. I've had cantalope be ripe in late august. So if yours survives to bear through september - it could happen.
You can plant nearly any annual flowers you can find now (annual being ones that ou have to plant every year). Also lots of perennial flowers are available now. Go ahead and plant anything you like!
Black-eyed susans start flowering soon - and they flower pretty much up until the first frost. They form a bigger clump every year. And make long-lasting cut flowers for inside.
Here is a list of annuals that LOVE the summer heat and humidity and will flower until the first frost.
Vinca (or periwinkles)
Portulaca (or rose moss)
Purslane
Lantana
Gazanias
Zinnias
Marigolds
Ageratum
Pentas
Osteospermum (or African Daisy)
Million Bells (or Calibrochia)
Tropical Hibiscus
Check your local garden center - they should still have most of these things. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
p.s. - I agree with previous answer in regards to cantalope!
